Apple Rootstock Size Chart

*Please note: All tree heights in our chart are for mature tree size and are given as a guide only. The eventual size of your grafted tree will be influenced by a number of factors, including: soil type and fertility, local climate conditions, and the vigour of the scion wood cultivar.

Grafting & Liner Grade Apple Rootstock

Each rootstock, when harvested, is graded, and placed in sizes by diameter or thickness of the rootstock

Grafting Grade Rootstock

Thicker and ready for grafting use straight way, either by bench grafting or plant out and field grafting.

Liner Grade Rootstock

Smaller in diameter and commonly used for growing on and then grafting in the following year. Alternatively, it can also be used for bud grafting in the late summer

Apple Rootstock M27 - 'Malling 27'

Super Dwarfing is 20% of Seedling Tree Height. Apple rootstock M27 is very dwarfing apple rootstock, which will produce a small tree that can be grown successfully in containers. Ideal for small spaces. Trees grown on M27 rootstock will begin fruiting very early and are high yielding. Suitable for high density planting.

Trees will require support from staking or trellis.

Apple Rootstock B9 – ‘Budagovski 9’

B9 is very dwarfing, with the tree reaching 30% of seedling tree height. B9 is an apple rootstock that will produce a small tree with heavy crops. B9 is useful for high density plantings and can be planted as close as 30cm apart on a trellis. The red leaves make it easy to spot suckers and failed grafts. B9 can be used as an interstem.

Early yields inB9 will require support through staking or trellis.

Apple Rootstock M9 - ‘Malling 9’

M9 is very dwarfing rootstock, with the tree 35% of seedling height. M9 will produce a small tree with heavy crops and early yielding. The fruit is larger and will ripen earlier. Suitable for high density planting, M9 is the most common dwarfing rootstock used worldwide.

Trees will require support from staking or trellis.

Apple Rootstock M26 – ‘Malling 26’

M26 is dwarfing rootstock, with the tree reaching 45% of seedling tree height. M26 will produce a small tree with heavy crops, early yielding, and good-sized fruit. Suitable for high density plantings.

Supporting M26 by staking or on trellis is highly recommended.

Apple Rootstock MM102 – ‘Malling Merton 102’

MM102 is semi-dwarfing, with the tree reaching between 45% and 60% of the seedling tree height. It produces a medium sized tree, with average to good crop sizes. MM102 will perform better in slightly wetter soils and replant sites and is resistant to woolly aphid.

MM102 has good anchorage, however support may be beneficial

Apple Rootstock MM106 - ‘Malling Merton 106’

MM106 is semi-dwarfing, with the tree reaching up to 70% of the seedling tree height. It produces a medium size tree with high yields and requires well-draining soils. MM106 is widely used in commercial orchards where trees are planted in density. MM106 produces few suckers and is resistant to woolly aphid

Apple Rootstock MM111 – ‘Malling Merton 111’

MM111 is semi-dwarfing, with the tree reaching up to 75% of the seedling tree height. This hardy rootstock will grow in most soil types and will handle a wide range of conditions. Suitable for both heavy clay and light soils. MM111 will tolerate mild drought conditions once established. It is also an excellent rootstock to use as replant in older orchards. It is resistant to woolly aphid and moderately resistant to collar rot.

Apple Rootstock N/SPY – ‘Northern Spy’

N/SPY is a vigorous rootstock, with the tree reaching up to 75% of the seedling tree height. This hardy rootstock will grow in most soil types and is suitable for both heavy clay and light soils. N/SPY is an excellent rootstock used as replant in older orchards. It is resistant to both woolly aphid and collar rot.
